Natalie Portman is an Israelian actress who plies her trade in the US. She was born Natalie Hershlag on June 9, 1981 in Jerusalem and happens to be the only child of her Jewish parents.
Her dad, Avner Hershlag is an Israeli-born gynecologist whereas her mother, Shelley is an American homemaker who also doubles as her agent. They trace their origin to Russia, Poland and Austria.
Portman moved to the US with her family and settled in Washington DC. However, they later moved to Connecticut in 1988 but only lived there for two years as they found themselves moving again in 1990 to Long Island.
A Revlon agent noticed a young Portman when she was only teen years at a pizza restaurant and asked if she would love to be a child model. However, the young girl (Portman) had other ideas hence did not accept the offer.
She rather went in for an acting agent and in 1992 auditioned for off-Broadway Ruthless where she was chosen as an understudy for Laura Bell Bundy. After Ruthless, Portman again auditioned for a role in an action drama titled “Léon: The Professional (1994) which she secured the lead role.
